1983: Singer and drummer Karen Carpenter, one half of the pop duo group The Carpenters with her brother Richard, dies of heart failure at the age of 32 in Downey, Calif. Carpenter's death, which was related to complications caused by the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, led to increased visibility and awareness of eating disorders.
