1865: President Abraham Lincoln signs the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, a day after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send it to the state legislatures for ratification. The amendment would be formally adopted when Georgia became the 27th of the then 36 states to ratify it on Dec. 6, 1865.
