1919: Hall of Fame baseball player Jackie Robinson, who broke the sport's color barrier when he debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, is born in Cairo, Ga. Robinson, who won the inaugural MLB Rookie of the Year Award in 1947 and the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and his uniform number, 42, was "universally" retired across all major league teams in 1997.
