1992: Sportscaster Howard Cosell retires with the last airing of his daily five-minute radio spot, "Speaking of Sports," which had run for 39 years. Cosell, arguably the best-known and most controversial sports broadcaster in the history of the medium, had been winding down his career after surgery in June 1991 to remove a cancerous tumor from his chest.
