1945: The Nazis begin the evacuation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland as Soviet forces close in. Nearly 60,000 prisoners are forced on a death march toward a camp in Wodzislaw Slaski, Poland, with those too weak or sick to walk left behind. The remaining 7,500 prisoners left at Auschwitz would be liberated by the 322nd Rifle Division of the Red Army on Jan. 27.
