2002: Dave Thomas, the founder and chief executive officer of the fast-food restaurant chain Wendy's, dies of liver cancer at the age of 69 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Thomas, who named the restaurant chain after his daughter, was also known for his appearances in more than 800 commercial advertisements for the chain from 1989 to 2002.
