1984: Film director Sam Peckinpah, best known for such films as "The Wild Bunch," "Straw Dogs," "The Getaway," "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia," dies of heart failure at the age of 59 in Inglewood, Calif.
