1981: Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first American test-tube baby, is born in Norfolk, Va. She was the 15th baby in the world to be born as a result of the in-vitro fertilization procedure. Despite the nickname, the in-vitro fertilization that led to Carr's conception actually took place in a petri dish.
