1912: At a meeting of the Geological Society of London, Charles Dawson announces that a workman at the Piltdown gravel pit had given him a fragment of the skull four years earlier. The skull, initially believed to be one of the most important fossilized hominid skulls ever found, is later found to be a hoax.
