1936: In London, the Crystal Palace is destroyed after what starts as a small office fire spreads quickly due to high winds and the building's dry old timber flooring. The a cast-iron and plate-glass building was originally built in London's Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 but was moved to a South London suburb in 1854.
