1951: Film director Kathryn Bigelow, best known for directing movies such as "Near Dark," "Point Break" and "The Hurt Locker," is born in San Carlos, Calif. In 2009, she would become the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for "The Hurt Locker," which was also nominated for Best Picture.
