1938: LSD is first synthesized by Swiss chemist Dr. Albert Hofmann (seen here in 2006) at the Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland, as part of a large research program searching for medically useful ergot alkaloid derivatives. The short form "LSD" comes from the drug's early code name LSD-25, an abbreviation for the German "Lysergsäure-diethylamid" followed by a sequential number
