1998: A U.S. federal judge orders 37 brokerage houses, including Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, and Salomon Smith Barney, to pay $1.03 billion to cheated NASDAQ investors to compensate for price-fixing. This is the largest civil settlement in United States history.
