1963: Singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant, who left the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1993 and has since released five solo albums, including the five-times-Platinum "Tigerlily" and the platinum-certified "Ophelia," is born in Jamestown, N.Y.
