1898: During the Spanish-American War, the United States invades Puerto Rico with a landing at Guánica. As an outcome of the war, Spain cedes Puerto Rico, along with the Philippines and Guam, that were under Spanish sovereignty, to the U.S. under the Treaty of Paris. Fifty-four years later, on the same day, Puerto Rico would officially be declared a self-governing commonwealth of the U.S.
