Great Anthracite Coal Strike -- Seeking better wages and conditions, more than 147,000 coal miners went on strike from May to October 1902 in eastern Pennsylvania, an area that contained the majority of the nation’s supply of anthracite coal. With an energy crisis looming, workers got a 10 percent raise -- half of what they were bargaining for.
