LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Like the rest of the nation, La Crosse County is seeing a final push to sign up for health insurance as the deadline approaches.

Certified Application Counselors from the Western Region Enrollment Network are available at the County Administrative Center all week. They're walking people how to apply for health insurance coverage through HealthCare.gov before the March 31 deadline.

The Affordable Care Act states anyone who doesn't have health insurance by then will pay a $95 fine or one-percent of their household income, whichever is more.

Earlier this week the Federal Health and Human Services announced 5 million people had signed up, including a bigger variety of applicants. We're seeing a similar surge here, according to Western Region Enrollment Network coordinator Lindsey Schwarz-Nichols.

"We've seen some 19-year-olds and some people in their early 60's as well, some people that are going to be Medicare age within the next couple of months, so quite the variety," said Schwarz-Nichols.

She said counselors helped about 50 people sign up for health insurance on Monday and Tuesday.

Counselors are available Wednesday night until 7 p.m. They'll be back at the La Crosse County Administrative Center in the IT Training and Testing Room, 400 4th St. N. Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. – 4p.m. On Saturday, they'll move to the La Crosse Health and Human Services building at 300 4th Street N. from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The event is open to any Wisconsin resident. You do not have to live in La Crosse County to talk to an available counselor this week.
