LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A new plan to provide training and recognition status to child care centers to be identified as “Breastfeeding Friendly” will help families choose the best care for their infants as parents return to work and school.

The La Crosse Area Breastfeeding Coalition has a set goal to improve the health of the La Crosse area by working to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The business needs to meet 10 steps to show they support and promote breastfeeding in their center.

"They would have a place for mom's to breast feed and to pump if that is appropriate, for staff people as well," said Jennifer Loging, La Crosse County Health Department nutrition director. "The policy would include staff being trained on breast feeding in handling breast milk, storing breast milk, feeding the baby."

Breastfeeding Friendly Child Care’s interest is determined by the input from area child care centers through a five minute survey, or by calling (608) 785-6423. The deadline for completing the survey is August 31.

Local representatives of the coalition consist of Gundersen Health System, La Crosse County Health Department, La Leche League, Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare, Monroe County Health Department, The Parenting Place and community liaisons.
