Gov. Terry Branstad says he is prepared to work on a compromise plan for how Iowa delivers health care to low-income residents.

Branstad has opposed expanding the Medicaid program in the state, proposing an alternate plan called Healthy Iowa. But he says Monday that he would consider taking the federal funds offered for expansion, if there was a guarantee that the state wouldn't get stuck with the bill if federal funding declines.

Branstad says he is trying to find a compromise with Senate Democrats and House Republicans. He stressed that no one will "get their way totally."

Lawmakers in the Senate and House say Branstad's remarks were a good sign that the parties might be able to reach a compromise.
