La Crosse hospitals have to be ready in case of an emergency like the one in Boston.
Gundersen Lutheran says everyone at the hospital has to be prepared, not just doctors and nurses.
The communications department, people who sterilize equipment, even the staff that clean sheets have to be prepared in case of a mass casualty.
It's something the hospital trains for all the time. "Where those people are going to go, who's going to do what and who we plan is something that doesn't come out of thin air, it takes a lot of effort on a lot of people's part to make sure we all know our roll and where we're supposed to be when disaster strikes," said Gundersen Lutheran E.R. Dr. Ben Wedrow.
The La Crosse Fire Department is also prepared. Firefighters train once or twice a year for large scale EMS drills.
