LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The County Health department is encouraging a healthy alternative to the morning commute.

Officials are asking people to consider walking or biking to school and work. They say our community has the right things in place to make it easy; complete streets, numerous bike lanes, and beautiful scenery.

Thanks to a $5,500 grant from the La Crosse Community Foundation, the department is not only able to talk about safety, it's also able to stress the health benefits. "You see more productive workers when they're active commuting or students who are walking or biking to school have more energy, more alert, ready to learn when they get to school, just a general healthier community overall," said Health Educator Rebecca Lakowske.

Plans are in place to make another big push before Bike to Work Week which is in the beginning of May.
