Since the very first MTV Video Music Awards 31 years ago in 1984, the show has always provided memorable moments. Ahead of the 2015 edition, set for Aug. 30, check out some of the most memorable.

2002: Nearing the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band open the VMAs by performing the 9/11-inspired song "The Rising" in front of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. After finishing the song, Springsteen and his band played for more than an hour for the fans who had gathered for their performance.
